Darren Rust’s work as a producer is rooted in the Upper Midwest music scene, with strong ties to both studio-based artists and high-mileage touring acts. One of the more notable intersections of those worlds came through his connection with Johnny Holm and the broader Holm musical circle.

Johnny Holm, often referred to as a “human jukebox,” built a decades-long reputation as one of the most enduring live performers in the Midwest, leading the Johnny Holm Band through thousands of shows across small towns, festivals, and regional circuits. His career has always centered on consistency, crowd connection, and longevity.

Rust’s connection into that world developed organically through overlapping regional networks. Members and affiliates of the Johnny Holm Band were already working with Rust in the studio, which made him a natural fit when it came time to bring a more polished, record-focused approach to a project within that circle.

The album We Were Only Young Once represents that crossover point, blending road-tested performance energy with studio-level production discipline. For a live-first act, the goal was to capture that energy while shaping it into a record that holds up on repeat listening.

Rust’s background with The Blenders and his broader production work positioned him well for that role, bridging polished, vocal-focused production with organic, performance-based music.

In that sense, We Were Only Young Once stands as a snapshot of two overlapping music cultures in Minnesota, bringing together the road-tested world of Johnny Holm and the precision of Rust’s studio production.
